VENETIAN CARNIVAL AND FOPS

Venetian carnival is a metaphor for my fear of oncoming blindness. I have a dread of unseen disorder in my environment, like sudden curbs, people moving faster than I am, cars where they shouldn’t be. Venetian carnival is a poetic translation, with its unsettling, dangerous overtones (as well as gorgeous textiles and costumes, which I love to draw). Masks are worn, which suggest revealing/concealing the self. The Venetian images are not meant to be decorative, but a theatrical overstatement of the disguises and hidden fears of everyday life…”
